DOC4: Radiant Systems

Haar oeuvre construeert de architecturale en conceptuele formats voor fosforescerende nanodeeltjes-pigmenten en fluorescerende draden om te fungeren in een nieuwe reeks wandtapijten - geactiveerd door LED, UV-licht en duisternis. Deze muurschilderingen ontvouwen zich over drie met elkaar verweven registers: materieel, optisch en metafysisch. Ontwikkeld door middel van een gelaagde methodologie van werktekeningen, textiel-/ideeënstudies en diagrammatische kaarten, maakt elk element deel uit van de structurele en temporele functie van het werk.

De prachtige eerste zin van Sol LeWitt, Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to conclusions that logic cannot reach, biedt een kijkje in het proces van Barberis. De intuïtieve logica die hier aan het werk is, is niet impulsief, maar somatisch en onuitgesproken, en functioneert binnen een choreografie van drempels, waar structurele grenzen elastisch blijven en vorm ontstaat uit een diepe en eenvoudige pre-reflectieve reactie. In haar werk zijn herhaling en omkering geen formele middelen, maar ruimtelijke drempels waardoor percepties opnieuw worden samengesteld.

Een lijn in het werk van Irene Barberis vindt het onopgemerkte in het alledaagse. Ondergedompeld in tekeningen uit Sol LeWitts studio's in Chester en Italië, richt ze zich steeds meer op het begrip duet – een compositiemethode die is afgestemd op relationele spanning en balans, in plaats van alleen een solo-uitingen. De ruimte tussen dingen wordt actief en via die ruimte verkent de kunstenaar een soort sonar: de manier waarop resonantie zowel wordt gehoord als gevoeld via licht, muziek, stilte of nauwelijks zichtbare overgangen. Deze werken geven niet alleen weer, ze reageren ook. Ze resoneren, weerspiegelen en keren terug – stille systemen van aanwezigheid en verdwijning.

DOC4: Radiant Systems - Irene Barberis

Irene Barberis is an Australian-British artist, curator and university lecturer currently a guest at 37PK in the artist's residency DOC4. Here she is working on the multi-year The Sol LeWitt Project: Ten Countries and simultaneously developing her own work. In DOC4's studio, in the last weeks of het stay in Haarlem, she is presenting new work she created here.

This body of work constructs the architectural and conceptual formats for phosphorescent nano-particle pigments and fluorescent threads to perform in a new set of tapestries - activated through LED, UV light, and darkness. These wall drawings unfold across three interwoven registers: material, optical, and metaphysical. Developed through a layered methodology of working drawings, textile/ideation studies, and diagrammatic mappings, each element forms part of the work’s structural and temporal function.

Sol LeWitt’s wonderful first sentence that Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to conclusions that logic cannot reach, provides a lens into Barberis’ process. The intuitive logic at play here is not impulsive, but somatic and unspoken, functioning within a choreography of thresholds, where structural boundaries remain elastic, and form arises from a deep and simple pre-reflective response. In her acts of working, repetition and reversal are not formal devices but spatial thresholds through which perceptions are recomposed.

A trajectory in Irene Barberis’ practice finds the unnoticed within the mundane. Immersed in drawing from Sol LeWitt’s Chester and Italian studios, she is increasingly focused upon the notion of duet - a compositional mode attuned to relational tension and balance, rather than only a solo assertion. The space between things becomes active, and through it, the artist explores a per sonar: the way resonance is both heard and felt through light, music, silence, or barely visible transitions. These works do not only depict; they respond. They resonate, mirror, and return - quiet systems of presence and disappearance.
